Having worked as a web developer and even now attempting to expand my own business as a web developer/designer I have found so many websites with incredibly basic errors. I understand that not everyone is perfect but in this day and age a strong website presence requires so much more than a simple site built with some free site builder. It requires a level of professionalism that will provide you with a complete customer engagement.
Common Things That Customers Can’t Find on Your Website
I don’t know how many times I have looked on a “professional” website and I can’t find anything on pricing. Not even a request a quote… I know that it isn’t true but as a customer I find myself wondering “no pricing must mean it is really expensive?!?!”.
An easy solution for this is to provide a pricing table. If the business (or client) refuses to provide pricing than a “request a quote” option needs to be available.
This one is the most disappointing. A 1 page website with vague information. This is distasteful in a modern age of web design. I find this frequently on photography and service industries.
A professionally designed website can go a long way but I understand the financial constraints of a small business. A standard set of pages can go a long way. You should include the following pages if your website permits: Home, About, Blog, Store and Contact Us.
Examples of Work
This is the last of the 4 dangerous things that can hurt your web presence. A basic portfolio is nice but an advance one with categories can really spice up a website and assist your click through ratio.
If you are using WordPress or another content management system you can use a plugin to provide a photo gallery or an organized set of pages dedicated to your work. Fill out all meta tags to help SEO.
Other Website Blunders
- SEO Problems – Over using keywords, no alt or title tags and more…
- Improperly Sized Images (too big or over compressed)
- Not Mobile Optimized. 56% of all web traffic is on a mobile device. Your site will also be lowered in Google’s ranking if you are not mobile optimized (a subdomain is no longer a suitable alternative and is an SEO nightmare waiting to happen).
Maybe I will write a blog post on common Search Engine Optimization errors or Google Analytics errors. There are plenty to go around. If you have found that your website contains these errors please feel free to reach out to me for assistance.
