I get asked “what to do with an old computer?” every now and then. This question has been posed enough that I figured it deserved a blog post regarding it. Old towers are starting to become a thing of the past. There has been a trend toward all in ones and laptops not to mention tablets and smart phones are apart of the person.
What to do with that old computer?
1. Make a Project of it.
- Make it a router with pfsense.
- Fish tank?
- Turn it into a Linux box (Network storage or some other project)
2. Donate It.
Computers can be a lifesaver in low income neighborhoods. People can use them to find jobs. Pretty cool! Places like Goodwill will also accept old computers working or not.
3. Shoot it up.
If you are a gun advocate than take it to the range and shoot it up. I purchased some adhesive targets from Sportsman’s Warehouse. All I do is just put that on the side of the tower and go to town at it.
4. Recycle It.
Places like Best Buy will recycle old computer towers and monitors. They also do T.Vs up to 32 inches.
I lean towards making a project out of your old computer. It is an adventure and in reality you aren’t out anything if you wreck it. I have made file servers, media servers and much more. I also enjoy point #3. I take my Ruger 10/22 and go to town on old towers. This is a great way to kill time and have some fun.
Please make sure to follow local and federal rules regarding the recycling of old computer towers
